Unsettled weather and cyclones during February , March resulted in a number of charters being delayed and rescheduled. This is typical of the late summer, early autumn months in tropical Queensland. Of course there were some perfect days during this period but it was not until April and May that we got back into full swing with regular charters. With winter approaching, the weather should be much more settled resulting in excellent fishing conditions on the reef in coming months. The days are still very warm and and sunny and nights are mild with only a very slight early morning chill. These are great times to visit Agnes Water and Town of 1770 on the Coral Coast, particularly if you are suffering the colder winters down south. Fishing the southern Great Barrier Reef is great all year round but is particularly good through the late autumn, winter and spring period.

Recent charters over the last months from January to April still delivered some great catches. There were good catches of the usual reds - red emperor and coral trout, and also plenty of mackeral and tuna to be had. Below are some pictures of recent trips from January to April.

Excellent fishing conditions prevailed in October / November. Annual fishing closures occured for a week in October and November for the spawning season so no fishing for our normal cathes of red emporer and coral trout were conducted at these times. Weekends outside of the closures were heavily booked with great catches on all trips.

Winter months are very mild up at Agnes Water and Town of 1770. With day temperatures often in the low 20’s and nights 10-15 C, this is the place to go to escape the southern cold states and do a bit of reef fishing. Calmer seas prevail at this time of year so you will be most likely to encounter good conditions when booking your reef or game fishing charter in June or July. We have added a web link to our site so you can track the weather conditions up here on the reef. Just follow our link to the Bureau of Meteorology or to seebreeze for a 7 day forecast. In this gallery we have included some snaps of typical catches in the winter months. Red emporer and coral trout are plentiful all year round and of course there are the many other varieties of reef fish to make fishing interesting at this time of year.

Live bait was the go on this trip and we had a plentiful supply of live herring on board. The reds were also biting well on fresh fish bait and a few husser were sacrificed to catch some large red emporer. All clients were happy with their catches and were please to be taking home full eskies of large reds.

Trips to the outer Great Barrier Reef from the Town of 1770 around late summer can sometimes require some flexibility. This time of year presents the possibility of some wet weather and possibly cyclones. This year cyclone Hamish significantly affected the reef fishing season and some trips had to be resceduled due to bad weather conditions. At Coral Coast Game Fishing we closely monitor weather forecasts and keep in contact with our clients to ensure their reef fishing adventure is an enjoyable experience they will never forget. There were still many great fishing days during this summer season and this gallery shows the results.

The first of the Reef Closures came into effect this month which limited the available charter time to the first 3 weeks and of course the weather didn’t play the game and we had about a week of bad weather.
Still managed to get out with Neville and mates to catch this lot.

Still managed to get out with Neville and mates to catch this lot.

August started with a charter for a group of guys from a Gold Mine near Cloncurry. The weather came good and so did the fishing. The boys got onto some good size Coral Trout and a few Reds as well.

A week and a bit on the Slip for our annual maintenance cut into the fishing time but with the bottom cleaned and the prop polished we were back in the water and ready to take the next group (all the way from Geelong) out after their share.

The water was a bit cold but the guys still managed to get a pretty good catch of a variety of fish with some good sizes amongst them.

A quick turnaround for the final charter for August and the water was still too cold for the fish to be too interested in our baits. We still managed to get an esky full of some good fish for the boys on board and they went home to Brisbane happy with their days fishing.
